AF Harare History

The Alliance française de Harare was created in 1951 under the impulse of the “Cerle de l’Alliance française de Salisbury” at the Harare Polytechnic. At that time, Southern Rhodesia had for the first time in its history a French club which was inaugurated for the French Consul on April 19, 1951. Since its emergence, the Alliance Française de Harare (AFH) in Zimbabwe has had three main missions: organizing cultural and social events, promoting the French language and culture, and promoting exchanges with France. The AFH has always been anchored in the local cultural and educational landscape.

Since 1982, its headquarters, which it owns, is located at 328 Herbert Chitepo Avenue, a major thoroughfare near the CBD of Harare.
